Miss Saigon is a modern retelling of the Puccini opera, Madame Butterfly, with the location transferred from Japan to Vietnam in the mid-1970s during the final days of the Vietnam War.
The story centres on Chris, an American Marine serving at the US Embassy in Saigon and Kim, a young Vietnamese woman who has fallen on hard times and is forced to work in a Saigon brothel.
Chris and Kim fall in love but are separated after the fall of Saigon and the US evacuation, to be briefly reunited in Bangkok - where Kim discovers that Chris has married and Chris learns that he has a son.
