John and Olga in Dancing on Ice

ITV1
14 January 2006 to 4 February 2006

In 2006 John added to his skills by taking part in the pro-celebrity TV ice dance competition, Dancing on Ice. The show saw the return of World and Olympic champions, Torvill and Dean, as trainers of the celebrity skaters.

John was partnered with former Junior World Champion, Olga Sharutenko, a pairing which John named "Team Barrowtenko". He was controversially voted off the show in the fourth week, despite having received consistently high marks from the professional judges for his exuberant routines.

ITV was inundated with phone calls and e-mails after the result, with people up and down the country maintaining that it was a travesty for one of the most talented performers to be ousted from the show so early – and on a slender voting margin of just a few votes.

Talking about the result, John said:

"I was upset and I was a bit gutted because I really enjoyed it. I was really enjoying the skating and enjoying the creative process of working with Chris [Dean] and Jayne [Torvill] at the beginning of the week and getting that routine going. But you know, all good things have to come to an end at some point and what a better way of going out! I’ve gone out in a bit of a controversy and I think it will be remembered for a long time."

John put his new ice dancing skills to good use again when he starred in Robin Hood: The Pantomime Adventure in 2008 and 2009, which featured an ice-grotto dream sequence.
